First, the good news. “The vast majority of aircraft accidents are survivable, and the majority of people in accidents survive,” says Galea. Since 1988, aircraft and the seats inside them must be built to withstand an impact of up to 16G, or g-force up to 16 times the force of gravity. That means, he says, that in most incidents, “it’s possible to survive the trauma of the impact of the crash.”

For instance, he classes the initial Jeju Air incident as survivable an assumed bird strike, engine loss and belly landing on the runway, without functioning landing gear. “Had it not smashed into the concrete reinforced obstacle at the end of the runway, it’s quite possible the majority, if not everyone, could have survived,” he says.

The Azerbaijan Airlines crash, on the other hand, he classes as a non-survivable accident, and calls it a “miracle” that anyone made it out alive.

Most aircraft involved in accidents, however, are not as suspicion is growing over the Azerbaijan crash shot out of the sky.

And with modern planes built to withstand impacts and slow the spread of fire, Galea puts the chances of surviving a “survivable” accident at at least 90%.

Instead, he says, what makes the difference between life and death in most modern accidents is how fast passengers can evacuate.

Aircraft today must show that they can be evacuated in 90 seconds in order to gain certification. But a theoretical evacuation practiced with volunteers at the manufacturers’ premises is very different from the reality of a panicked public onboard a jet that has just crash-landed.
Galea, an evacuation expert, has conducted research for the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) looking at the most “survivable” seats on a plane. His landmark research, conducted over several years in the early 2000s, looked at how passengers and crew behaved during a post-crash evacuation, rather than looking at the crashes themselves. By compiling data from 1,917 passengers and 155 crew involved in 105 accidents from 1977 to 1999, his team created a database of human behavior around plane crashes.

His analysis of which exits passengers actually used “shattered many myths about aircraft evacuation,” he says. “Prior to my study, it was believed that passengers tend to use their boarding exit because it was the most familiar, and that passengers tend to go forward. My analysis of the data demonstrated that none of these myths were supported by the evidence.”

Officials are concerned not just about the lack of vessels leaving China, but the speed at which that number dropped.

“That’s cause for alarm,” said Mario Cordero, the CEO of the Port of Long Beach. “We are now seeing numbers in excess of what we witnessed in the pandemic” for cancellations and fewer vessel arrivals.

The busiest ports in the country are experiencing steep declines in cargo. The Port of Long Beach is seeing a 35-40% drop compared to normal cargo volume. The Port of Los Angeles had a 31% drop in volume this week, and the Port of New York and Jersey says it’s also bracing for a slowdown. On Wednesday, the Port of Seattle said it had zero container ships in the port, another anomaly that hasn’t happened since the pandemic.

“That’s because just nothing is being shipped over,” port commissioner Ryan Calkins told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

Guillermo Barrantes relationship with Larry Mock was supposed to begin and end in Palm Springs.

It was a “casual, brief encounter.” A vacation dalliance that only lasted half a day.

“It was just so casual, so easily nothing could have happened from it,” Guillermo tells CNN Travel. “We could have walked away and just had our lives separate. But of course that didn’t happen, because it wasn’t meant to be that way. It was meant to be the way that it was. That it is.”

It all started in summer 2013. Guillermo - then in his early 40s - was on vacation in the California resort city of Palm Springs. He was in a phase of life where, he says, he was prioritizing himself, and wasn’t interested in long term romance.

“I thrived in being by myself, in traveling by myself, in having dinner by myself I loved all of that so much,” says Guillermo, who lived in Boston, Massachusetts at the time.

“I wanted no commitment, I wanted no emotional entanglement of any kind. I wanted to have fun, get to know myself. And it was in that mode that I met Larry, when I wasn’t really looking.”

During the vacation in Palm Springs, Guillermo was staying at a friend’s apartment, and while the friend worked during the day, Guillermo passed his time at a “run-down, no-frills” resort a couple of blocks away.

“You could just pay for a day pass, they’d give you a towel, and you could be in the pool and use their bar,” he recalls.

One day, as he was walking the palm tree-lined streets to the resort, Guillermo swiped right on a guy on a dating app Larry Mock, mid-40s, friendly smile. The two men exchanged a few messages back and forth. Larry said he was also on vacation in Palm Springs, staying in the resort Guillermo kept frequenting.

They arranged to meet there for a drink by the pool. Guillermo was looking forward to meeting Larry, expecting “some casual fun.”

Then, when Guillermo and Larry met, there was “chemistry” right away. Guillermo calls their connection “magnetic.”

“My impression of Larry: sexy, handsome and warm,” he recalls.

New Glenn vs. other powerful rockets
New Glenn packs significant power. Dubbed a “heavy-lift” vehicle, its capabilities lie between SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and the more powerful Falcon Heavy launch vehicle.

SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9, for example, can haul up to 22.8 metric tons (50,265 pounds) to space. While New Glenn is capable of carrying about double that mass, it may also be roughly the same price as a Falcon 9: reportedly around $60 million to $70 million per launch.

“I think in order to compete with Falcon 9, you have to go head-to-head or better on price,” said Caleb Henry, the director of research at Quilty Space, which provides data and analysis about the space sector.

The question, however, is whether Blue Origin will be able to sustain a competitive price point, Henry added.

Still, one feature that makes New Glenn stand out is its large payload fairing, or nose cone. The component protects the cargo bay and is a whopping 23 feet (7 meters) wide nearly 6 feet (2 meters) larger than that of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy.

Henry said Blue Origin likely opted to outfit New Glenn with such a large fairing in order to help fulfill Bezos’ vision of the future.

Scientists say they have the first recorded video evidence of narwhals using tusks not only to strike and manipulate fish during feeding but also engage in what appears to be playful behavior, according to the latest research.

The narwhal, often referred to as the “unicorn of the sea” in a nod to its trademark tusk, has long remained an enigma. Scientists have observed few interactions of narwhals in their natural habitat, creating speculation about the purpose of the species’ distinctive spiraling tusk.

Found predominantly in males, the tusk grows up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and previous research has suggested it serves as a competitive display to secure mates. But now, with the help of drones, research conducted in the Canadian High Arctic has uncovered that a narwhal may use its tusk for more than just courtship.

In total, the researchers newly identified and described 17 distinct behaviors of narwhals involving prey. The findings revealed a wide range of interactions and dynamics between narwhals and fish as well as the extraordinary agility, precision and speed of their tusks to track moving targets, according to the study published February 27 in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.

“Seeing that these animals are not actually hunting the fish but exploring, manipulating and interacting with it was really a game changer,” said lead author Dr. Gregory O’Corry-Crowe, a research professor in the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University.

Since so little is understood about this whale species, researchers like O’Corry-Crowe and his colleagues are working diligently to conduct studies to document narwhals’ unknown behaviors to better understand how these animals adapt in a rapidly shifting habitat as oceans warm and sea ice melts.
Narwhal exploratory behavior
The study team captured the groundbreaking footage using drones in Creswell Bay, on the eastern side of Somerset Island in Canada’s Nunavut territory, during the summer of 2022.

As the researchers analyzed the footage, they noticed subtle nuances in the narwhals’ behavior. Footage even captured one instance of a narwhal interacting with a fish by repeatedly nudging it with its tusk which is actually a giant tooth without attempting to eat it.

When researchers observed a lack of aggression in some interactions between narwhals and fish, they realized these scenarios were more similar to a cat-and-mouse game, in which the animals were chasing or “playing” rather than hunting, O’Corry-Crowe said.

Потребительский кооператив Бест Вей оказался затронут уголовным делом, касающимся в основном иностранной инвесткомпании Гермес, которое сейчас рассматривается Приморским районным судом Санкт-Петербурга. Более двух лет более 3,5 млрд рублей на счетах кооператива почти непрерывно арестованы по ходатайству сначала ГСУ ГУ МВД по Санкт-Петербургу, а затем Прокуратуры Санкт-Петербурга: пайщики не имеют возможности ни приобрести недвижимость, ни вернуть средства.

По данным совета потребительского кооператива Бест Вей, в числе его пайщиков, страдающих от блокировки средств, тысячи военнослужащих, в том числе сотни участников СВО, часть из которых успела приобрести квартиру, часть собирает или собрала первоначальный взнос, а часть планировала вступить в кооператив. СП пообщалась с некоторыми из них и их родственниками, чтобы узнать отношение к Бест Вей и событиям вокруг кооператива.

К кооперативу отношение очень хорошее

Александр Голдман на СВО с мая 2022 года как доброволец, три ранения. Пришел на СВО рядовым, сейчас начальник штаба батальона. Был пайщиком кооператива, сейчас пайщик его мама.
С помощью кооператива в 2019 году приобретена двухкомнатная квартира во Владивостоке, в которой проживает мама, рассказывает он. Расплачиваемся за нее, в ближайшие месяцы намерены погасить задолженность перед кооперативом и оформить квартиру в собственность. К кооперативу отношение очень хорошее, полностью его поддерживаю он дает возможность без больших переплат приобрести недвижимость. К действиям в отношении кооператива отношусь отрицательно, так как Бест Вей“ единственная возможность приобрести жилье в рассрочку.

Происходящее вокруг кооператива вызывает шок

Гвардии рядовой Глушков Иван Васильевич пайщик кооператива из Челябинской области. Танкист, мобилизованный, проходил службу в 15-й отдельной гвардейской мотострелковой Александрийской бригаде 2-й гвардейской общевойсковой армии ЦВО. Погиб 11 октября 2023 года.
Рассказывает его вдова Татьяна Неручева:

Мы внесли первоначальный паевый взнос и во второй половине 2021 года встали в очередь на приобретение квартиры в Челябинске, когда начались события вокруг кооператива была заблокирована его возможность приобретать недвижимость и заблокированы его счета. Наша очередь должна была подойти примерно через год. Мы заявили для приобретения небольшую квартиру, но планировали при покупке увеличить ее стоимость до 3 млн и купить двухкомнатную квартиру с увеличением первоначального паевого взноса: уставом кооператива это позволяется, а затем переехать из Коркино в Челябинск. Сейчас 3 млн хватит только на небольшую квартиру-студию метров 25, то есть мы понесли материальный ущерб из-за блокирования деятельности кооператива, так как лишены были возможности приобрести квартиру, на которую собрали первоначальный паевый взнос. Работа кооператива заблокирована, счета арестованы уже более двух лет. В наследование пая я только вступаю, так как муж очень долго считался пропавшим без вести долго шла экспертиза, и свидетельство о смерти мы получили только 18 июня этого года.

Татьяна юрист: Как у юриста у меня происходящее вокруг кооператива вызывает шок, и любой непредвзятый юрист вам скажет то же самое. Кооператив, подчеркивает она, абсолютно прозрачен, он полностью соответствует законодательству о кооперации что и подтверждалось многократно государственными органами и судами. Если бы мы с мужем не были уверены, что все прозрачно и законно, мы бы не вкладывали в него деньги. Мы не подавали заявление о выходе из кооператива. Я, несмотря ни на что, жду счастливого завершения рукотворного кризиса вокруг кооператива. Для меня это еще и память о муже он продал долю в квартире, которая ему принадлежала, чтобы вложиться в кооператив. Кроме того, мне хочется понять до какого маразма может дойти ситуация у нас в государстве в плане незаконных действий в отношении организации, которая по тем или иным причинам не понравилась каким-то чиновникам?.

‘A short and significant relationship’: How a piano in a pickup builds connections

Dozens of internationally renowned recording artists give concerts in Vegas every year, but the musician who connects best with people might be a local troubadour who improvises on a piano in the back of his pickup.

The maestro, Danny Kean, calls his setup The Traveling Piano, and he has traversed North America sharing music for nearly 20 years.

Kean’s home base is Las Vegas now, and every time he plays, he invites passersby to climb aboard the truck and tickle the ivory for themselves. However, even with the new findings about microlightning, questions remain about life’s origins, he added. While some scientists support the notion of electrically charged beginnings for life’s earliest building blocks, an alternative abiogenesis hypothesis proposes that Earth’s first amino acids were cooked up around hydrothermal vents on the seafloor, produced by a combination of seawater, hydrogen-rich fluids and extreme pressure.

Researchers identified salt minerals in the Bennu samples that were deposited as a result of brine evaporation from the asteroid’s parent body. In particular, they found a number of sodium salts, such as the needles of hydrated sodium carbonate highlighted in purple in this false-colored image salts that could easily have been compromised if the samples had been exposed to water in Earth’s atmosphere.

Sabae, located on Japan’s main Honshu island near the city of Fukui, has been producing quality eyewear for more than a century.

Кроме того, в деятельность финансовой пирамиды были вовлечены более 18 тысяч россиян. Они вложили в жилищный кооператив более 15 миллиардов рублей, два миллиарда из которых организаторы криминальной схемы присвоили. Десять предполагаемых участников преступного сообщества были задержаны в феврале 2022 года оперативниками ГУЭБиПК МВД России совместно с коллегами из Санкт-Петербурга и сотрудниками ФСБ России. Остальные обвиняемые в противоправной деятельности объявлены в розыск. Возбуждено уголовное дело по признакам преступления, предусмотренного частью 3 статьи 210, частью 4 статьи 159, частью 2 статьи 172.2 УК РФ. Расследование было взято на контроль руководством Следственного департамента МВД России, сообщила Ирина Волк.

По информации МВД, в общей сложности полицейскими и сотрудниками ФСБ проведено более 100 обысков по местам проживания фигурантов и в офисах подконтрольных им организаций. Изъята компьютерная техника, средства связи, документы и другие предметы, имеющие доказательственное значение.

В качестве обеспечительной меры по возмещению причиненного материального ущерба наложен арест на более чем 2300 находящихся в собственности кооператива квартир, а также на денежные средства на счетах компании в сумме свыше 3,7 млрд рублей. Также арестованы активы фигурантов на общую сумму порядка 1 млрд рублей, рассказала генерал-майор полиции.

По версии следствия, противоправная деятельность велась с 2014 года на территории девяти регионов России. Злоумышленниками были созданы подконтрольные организации с сетью региональных филиалов, которые работали под единым брендом Лайф из Гуд. Гражданам предлагали стать пайщиками кооператива, обещая либо новое жилье, либо получение дохода в размере до 30% годовых. При этом реальным инвестированием вкладов фигуранты не занимались. Приобретение недвижимости и обещанные выплаты осуществлялись за счет привлечения средств новых клиентов. Кроме того, граждан вводили в заблуждение об уровне доходности вложений, указывая в договорах параметры гораздо ниже обещанных. Полученные от вкладчиков деньги похищались.

Ранее стало известно, что Приморский районный суд Санкт-Петербурга заочно арестовал топ-лидера инвестиционного проекта Life is Good в Набережных Челнах Сергея Санникова и его жену Юлию. “The whole screen exploded,” he said.

Beutel, a computer engineer specializing in mountain monitoring, had just witnessed a glacier collapse. On May 28, an avalanche of millions of tons of ice and rock barreled down the slope, burying Blatten, a centuries-old village nestled in the valley below.

Local authorities had already evacuated the village after parts of the mountain had crumbled onto the glacier; a 64-year old man believed to have stayed remains missing.

But no one expected an event of this magnitude.

Successive rock avalanches onto the glacier increased the pressure on the ice, causing it to melt faster and the glacier to accelerate, eventually destabilizing it and pushing it from its bed. The collapse was sudden, violent and catastrophic. “This one just left no moment to catch a breath,” Beutel said.
The underlying causes will take time to unravel. A collapse of this magnitude would have been set in motion by geological factors going back decades at least, said Matthias Huss, a glaciologist at the Swiss university ETH Zurich.

But it’s “likely climate change is involved,” he said, as warming temperatures melt the ice that holds mountains together. It’s a problem affecting mountains across the planet.

People have long been fascinated with mountains for their dramatic beauty. Some make their homes beneath them around 1 billion live in mountain communities others are drawn by adventure, the challenge of conquering peaks.

These majestic landscapes have always been dangerous, but as the world warms, they are becoming much more unpredictable and much deadlier.

“We do not fully understand the hazard at the moment, nor how the dangers are changing with climate change,” said David Petley, an Earth scientist at the University of Hull in England.

На последние суды приходят все меньше и меньше свидетелей обвинения &ndash; под разными предлогами они отказываются, чтобы не поддерживать лживую версию следствия.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>Кооператив без вины виноватых</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Сергей Крючек возглавил крупнейший в России кооператив &ndash; 20 тыс. пайщиков во всех регионах страны &ndash; весной 2022 года, в период острого кризиса, после только что прошедшего первого обыска в офисе кооператива, в ходе которого были изъяты вся документация, базы данных, серверы, даже личные вещи и трудовые книжки сотрудников (и ничего до сих пор не возвращено: все учетные записи пришлось восстанавливать с нуля). Он и сам стал жертвой обысков в своем подмосковном доме &ndash; в ходе которых была изъята и до сих пор не возвращена коллекция наград.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Кооператив оказался &laquo;в уголовном деле&raquo; по странному стечению обстоятельств &ndash; он был объявлен следствием организацией, аффилированной с иностранной инвестиционной компанией &laquo;Гермес&raquo;, а значит, призванной ответить по ее обязательствам &ndash; хотя кооператив никак не был связан с &laquo;Гермесом&raquo; ни организационно, ни финансово: имел только общую систему продаж продуктов через маркетинговую фирму &laquo;Лайф-из-Гуд&raquo;. У &laquo;Гермеса&raquo; возникли проблемы с выплатами российским клиентам после взлома российского сегмента платежной системы системным администратором Евгением Набойченко &ndash; система в феврале 2022 года перестала работать, и появилась картинка с предложением обращаться в правоохранительные органы. Только выплаты прекратились не до действий Набойченко, а после них. Параллельно возникла ситуация со СВО и санкциями Запада, крайне затруднившая трансграничные финансовые операции.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Но кооператив &laquo;Бест Вей&raquo; никаких выплат не прекращал, он зарегистрирован в Санкт-Петербурге, все его активы находятся в России. И даже если учесть требования к нему со стороны лиц, признанных потерпевшими по уголовному делу, то нет никаких причин для блокирования работы кооператива: совокупный ущерб в обвинительном заключении &ndash; 282 млн рублей, притом что на счетах кооператива &ndash; более 4 млрд рублей. Эта сумма постоянно увеличивается, и еще 600 млн &ndash; дебиторская задолженность пайщиков кооперативу на сегодняшний день. 282 млн рублей могли быть заблокированы на счете кооператива, на котором аккумулируются средства из членских взносов, предназначенные для развития, &ndash; не было никаких причин блокировать всю деятельность кооператива! Тем не менее это длительное время происходило.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>Страхи охранителей</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Что стоит за преследованиями фирмы &laquo;Лайф-из-Гуд&raquo;, успешно работавшей с 2014 до начала 2022 года; компании &laquo;Гермес&raquo;, которая весь этот же период выполняла свои обязательства; кооператива &laquo;Бест Вей&raquo;, к которому вообще нет никаких претензий, кроме как со стороны тех, кого следствие убедило, что раз кооператив незаконный, они смогут взыскать членские взносы и еще со стороны людей, которым кооператив, заботясь о ликвидности, не дал купить объект недвижимости с перепланировкой? Что стоит за поддержкой властью репрессий против кооператива?&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Прежде всег, люди, которые пытаются получить контроль над миллиардными активами кооператива и других организаций, а также примкнувшие к ним силовики. Но похоже на то, что власть очень обеспокоил политический потенциал, стоящий за кооперативом, &ndash; все эти многотысячные собрания пайщиков на стадионах. Собрания людей, которым ничего не надо от государства &ndash; они готовы сами, вскладчину, решать свои жилищные и иные проблемы. Кого-то из охранителей это испугало и стало причиной зеленого света для репрессий против кооператива со стороны высокопоставленных силовиков.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>Лжеэксперты и лжеобвинения</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Кооператив, как и &laquo;Гермес&raquo;, был обвинен в том, что он является финансовой пирамидой. Приглашенный следствием эксперт из СПбГУ Маевский потребовал закрытого заседания &ndash; чтобы никто не слышал, как он плавает в теме. Утверждает, что финансирование покупки квартир старым пайщикам происходило за счет новых пайщиков: не понимает, что финансирование кооператива происходит не только за счет новых поступлений от пайщиков, но и за счет возвратных платежей за приобретенную на деньги кооператива недвижимость. А с осени 2021 года &ndash; времени внесения в предупредительный список ЦБ, почти исключительно за счет возвратных платежей от пайщиков, которым приобретена квартира. При этом ликвидность кооператива никак не пострадала. Объяснения со стороны адвокатов стали для этого экономиста откровением.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Значительная часть пайщиков стремится ускорить погашение долга перед кооперативом, чтобы скорее получить квартиру в собственность &ndash; ведь квартира с помощью кооператива приобретается почти без переплат. Переплаты связаны только со вступительным и членскими взносами; налогами, которые платятся по тарифам для юридического лица; оплатой проверки юридической чистоты и независимой оценки недвижимости.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">С весны 2022 года кооператив прекратил прием новых пайщиков, при этом на его ликвидности это никак не сказалось: средства на счетах продолжали расти, несмотря на то что многие пайщики боялись платить на арестованные счета и вносят платежи только сейчас.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>Спаситель&nbsp;</strong></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">С весны 2022-го до зимы 2025 года счета кооператива с небольшими перерывами были под арестом &ndash; причем запрещались даже выплаты по исполнительным листам пайщикам, которые приняли решение о выходе из кооператива, арестованы были, также с перерывами, квартиры, принадлежащие кооперативу, на 12 млрд рублей.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Под руководством Сергея Ивановича Крючека удалось добиться в судах снятия ареста с квартир, а затем частичного снятия ареста со счетов, разрешения с арестованных сумм выплачивать по исполнительным листам пайщикам, которые через суд добились возврата средств (в этом им активно помогал сам кооператив), а также налоги и заработную плату сотрудникам кооператива. Частичное &laquo;освобождение&raquo; счетов позволило осуществлять выплаты пайщикам, принявшим решение о выходе из кооператива и возврате своих средств.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Таких пайщиков около 2,5 тыс., общий объем выплат им &ndash; порядка 1,5 млрд рублей, значительная часть из них уже получила свои паевые средства &ndash; несмотря на огромные трудности с перечислением средств по 115-ФЗ: дело в том, что расследуется еще одно уголовное дело &ndash; по ст. 174 УК (хотя кооператив никаких денег за рубеж не переводил), открыто и новое дело по заявлениям потерпевших от &laquo;Гермеса&raquo;, не попавшим в уголовное дело, которое сейчас рассматривается судом. Кроме того, идет гражданский процесс по иску прокуратуры, блокирующему возможность приема новых пайщиков. И, несмотря на эти трудности, кооператив, возглавлявшийся до недавнего времени Сергеем Крючеком, ежедневно осуществляет выплаты выходящим из него пайщикам и успешно восстанавливает деятельность.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Важнейшее достижение Крючека &ndash; создание механизма, когда при арестованных счетах пайщики, которым уже приобретены объекты недвижимости, получили возможность погашать свой долг перед кооперативом и переоформлять недвижимость в собственность за счет средств других пайщиков, которые передают им свои арестованные паевые взносы, а взамен получают живые деньги от счастливых приобретателей квартир в собственность. Таким способом пайщикам удалось погасить долг перед кооперативом и полностью перевести недвижимость в собственность по десяткам объектов недвижимости.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Кооператив под руководством Сергея Крючека работал над тем, чтобы вновь начать приобретать квартиры пайщикам, которые стоят в очереди на покупку первыми. Тем более что ряд квартир будет освобожден пайщиками, которые отказались возвращать за них деньги и исключены из кооператива с возвратом паевых средств.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Кооператив, по мнению многих пайщиков, жив благодаря той огромной работе, которую проделал Сергей Крючек с весны 2022 года по весну 2025-го, успешному противостоянию произволу правоохранительной системы. Должностные лица ЦБ управляются тайными кукловодами
Почти три года назад кооператив Бест Вей был включен в предупредительный список ЦБ с этого начались его злоключения. Становится все более очевидным, что это заказная акция, в которой Центробанк действовал в интересах банковской мафии, принимая решения, которые никто даже не потрудился подтвердить документами и фактами.
Осенью 2021 года потребительский кооператив Бест Вей крупнейший российский кооператив, дававший возможность приобретать квартиры по всей России, в котором около 20 тыс. пайщиков, работающий с 2014 года, был включен в Список компаний с выявленными признаками нелегальной деятельности на финансовом рынке (предупредительный список) ЦБ против него был использован относительно новый, только появившийся в 2021 году инструмент регулирования ЦБ на финансовом рынке.
Притом, что примерно за полтора года до этого в 2019 году ЦБ в официальном письме по запросу одной из общественных организаций заявлял, что у него нет вопросов к кооперативу и в силу того, что потребительский кооператив не подведомствен ЦБ, и в силу того, что Банку России ничего не известно о нарушениях, которые требовали бы его вмешательства как мегарегулятора финансового рынка.
Однако в 2021 году все изменилось: включением в предупредительный список ЦБ попытался поставить кооператив вне закона, обрушить его деятельность. С включения в предупредительный список начались злоключения кооператива: блокирование его официальных информационных ресурсов, системы личных кабинетов и платежей, а затем и распространение на него уголовного дела, возбужденного той же осенью 2021 года по заявлением ряда клиентов иностранной компании Гермес. Кооператив был объявлен аффилированной с Гермесом структурой, постановлением руководителя следственной группы ему был присвоен статус гражданского ответчика по уголовному делу.

Липовые основания
Но что лежало в основе включения в предупредительный список? Это стало известно недавно из двух процессов в Приморском районном суде Санкт-Петербурга: уголовном, по обвинению бывших специалистов маркетинговой компании Лайф-из-Гуд, сотрудничавшей с Гермесом, в организации финансовой пирамиды, и гражданском по иску Прокуратуры Санкт-Петербурга о признании кооператива Бест Вей незаконным.
Оказывается, впервые справку о нарушениях в кооперативе подготовил в 2019 году некий центр компетенций Южного главка ЦБ в Краснодаре который уже ликвидирован, архив этого подразделения также, видимо, ликвидирован: первоисточников решений нет указывается, что это некие обращения граждан: каких граждан и что отмечается в обращении, не упоминается. При этом краснодарский центр указывал в отчете, что руководствовался методическими рекомендациями МВД РФ Квалификация и расследование организации деятельности финансовых пирамид.
Далее Северо-Западный главк ЦБ (прежний руководитель Надежда Савинская, нынешний руководитель Ирина Петрова) который обязан был провести собственную проверку по отношению к организациям в своей зоне ответственности (кооператив зарегистрирован в Санкт-Петербурге), просто переписывает документ из Краснодара и направляет его в прокуратуру.
Параллельно документ идет наверх и (теперь уже бывший) руководитель Департамента противодействия недобросовестным практикам ЦБ Валерий Лях, который, насколько известно, уехал из России допросить его в суде не удалось, подмахивает документ о включении кооператива в предупредительный список.
При этом проверка деятельности кооператива не проводилась никакая: ни выездная, ни камеральная. Документы у кооператива не запрашивались. Почему? А потому, объясняют представители ЦБ, что кооператив не является подведомственной ЦБ организацией и проверка была бы незаконной. То есть признать по выдуманным основаниям организацию недобросовестной и инициировать против нее уголовное дело можно, а проанализировать ее работу на основании подлинных документов нельзя.

Основано на заказе
ЦБ подкрепляет свое решение, во-первых, целыми восемью обращениями граждан несколько более поздними, чем полумифические краснодарские. Но ни одно из которых не подано членом кооператива.
Граждане интересуются в своих обращениях: кооператив законен? Нет ли к нему вопросов у регулирующих организаций?
Во-вторых, актом осмотра официального сайта кооператива в нем зафиксированы новости и структура личных кабинетов, больше ничего.
То есть решение, заблокировавшее нормальную деятельность кооператива более чем на два года, приведшее к аресту его счетов, абсолютно ни на чем не основано. Вернее, основано на заказе мафии, стремящейся захватить кооператив и конкурентов, борющихся с кооперативом.
При этом Центробанк рассказывает, что включение в список это только информирование потенциальных потребителей финансовых услуг о рисках, но сам же себе противоречит, говоря, что именно ЦБ обратился в Роскомнадзор о блокировании информационных ресурсов кооператива, именно он обратился в прокуратуру и органы внутренних дел с предложением возбудить уголовное дело. И именно на основании письма его Северо-Западного главка уголовное дело начало расследоваться в том числе и в отношении кооператива. При этом за несколько лет расследования ни одного криминального эпизода не найдено: деятельность кооператива абсолютно юридически чиста.

Ложь Набиуллиной
По поводу судьбы кооператива Бест Вей и других кооперативов депутаты Государственной думы неоднократно обращались к руководству ЦБ, в том числе лично к Эльвире Набиуллиной. Они предлагали разобраться в ситуации, при необходимости ввести дополнительный контроль со стороны ЦБ, который снимет сомнения со стороны ведомства.
Набиуллина в прошлом году публично пообещала на пленарном заседании Думы проработать вопрос кооперативов, совместно с депутатским корпусом выработать компромиссные предложения но за более чем год ничего не сделано!
Кооперация в России продолжает торпедироваться, а ведь это важнейший для экономического роста в стране сектор способный аккумулировать миллиарды рублей (на счетах Бест Вей более 4 млрд рублей!) и направить их в развитие экономики. Это важнейшее направление решения жилищного вопроса альтернатива ипотеке, которая недоступна подавляющему большинству граждан и единственное, чему помогает, это обогащению банков и мафии, стремящихся прибрать к рукам деньги граждан.

Круговая порука
Атаки центробанкиров на кооператив носят целенаправленный характер. Достоверно известно, что они велась с одобрения первого зампреда ЦБ Владимира Чистюхина не говоря уже о бывшем и нынешнем руководителях Северо-Западного главка ЦБ Савинской и Петровой, бывшем директоре (упраздненного в прошлом году) Департамента противодействия недобросовестным практикам Валерии Ляхе, а также главе забравшего его функции Департамента небанковского кредитования Илье Кочеткове.
Это не что иное, как круговая порука. В прошлом году к руководителю службы по защите прав потребителей и обеспечению доступности финансовых услуг ЦБ Михаилу Мамуте обратились по поводу очевидного нарушения законодательства банки отказались исполнить судебное решение о снятии ареста со счетов кооператива (позднее арест был наложен снова). Мамута под мифическими предлогами отказался наказать банки.
Очевидно, что происходит не что иное, как целенаправленное заказное преследование кооператива в интересах неких сил, волю которых стремится исполнить Центробанк.
Атаки, с одной стороны, в интересах банкиров, стремящихся установить ипотечную монополию и перекрыть кислород кооперации, а с другой тайных кукловодов, стремящихся захватить более 4 млрд на счетах кооператива.
Атака центробанкиров на кооператив должна быть вскрыта, расследована, виновные должны быть привлечены к ответственности!

The board decided Trump’s appointee, Peter Marocco the de-facto acting leader of USAID, another agency Trump has targeted was not lawfully in the job, and they alerted Congress, the removed board member Ward Brehm’s lawsuit said.

Marocco still showed up at the fund’s headquarters with staffers of the Department of Government Efficiency on Wednesday afternoon. They “were denied access to those offices,” the lawsuit said. “Marocco and his colleagues threatened to return to the offices with United States Marshals and Secret Service.”

А деньги уже, наверняка, потрачены. Также есть люди, которые уже живут в квартире от LIG или выплатили некую сумму, они верят до конца и отказываются принимать ситуацию, в которой надо признать, что они могут остаться и без денег, и без квартиры. В любом случае, даже если кто-то живет в квартире от LIG, она ему не принадлежит и, в отличие от банковского залога, урегулировать вопрос не получится (их просто выселят через суд при банкротстве LIG, хотя ситуация скандальная и возможно государство что-то предпримет, чтоб сгладить проблему).Теперь по сути, что такое LIG.

Компания LIG - Лайф-из-гуд заявляет два основных направления деятельности: инвестиционные счета Виста в компании Hermes Management Ltd. и жилищный кооператив Бест-вей альтернатива ипотеке.

Если верить консультантам Лайф-из-гуд, доходность счетов Виста в компании Гермес-менеджмент последние годы держится в районе 20% годовых в долларах. Это довольно много (Уоррен Баффет позавидовал бы такой доходности), при этом непонятно, за счет чего достигается такая доходность.

Деятельность Гермес-менеджмента непрозрачна, на сайте не видно полноценных отчетов, нет сведений о структуре компании и ее руководстве.

Гермес-менеджмент привлекает российских клиентов через компанию Лайф-из-гуд, но у него нет лицензии Центрального банка России на брокерскую деятельность или доверительное управление.

Гермес-менеджмент зарегистрирован в Белизе, офшорной зоне в Центральной Америке. Там же расположен офис компании. Еще в документах упоминается компания Hermes M в Шотландии. В случае проблем придется разбираться с зарубежной компанией, что делает задачу бесперспективной. Более того, учитывая реалии мошеннических схем, бывшие пайщики столкнутся еще и с лже-юристами, обещающими вернуть им вложенные деньги и конечно, останутся в крайне бедственном положении, с кредитами, без жилья и перспектив (у кого-то могут опуститься руки со всеми вытекающими).

Компания платит за привлечение новых клиентов, открывающих инвестиционные счета Виста (по сути - ничем не обеспеченные цифры на сайте. Заведение средств происходит через перевод средств на счета частных лиц(!), выполняющих роль консультантов LIG (а это сразу нарушает законы РФ и привлекает внимание регулятора), вывод - через перепродажу воздуха других буратинам. После внесения LIG в черный список, чаты структуры полны объявлений о продажи токенов Виста, но покупателей почти нет)) и вступающих в жилищный кооператив Бест-вей. Система комиссионных выглядит такой разветвленной и продуманной, что становится понятно, что именно в ней суть компании, а не в инвестициях или альтернативе ипотеке.

Сам по себе сетевой маркетинг вполне законный способ привлечения новых клиентов. Но когда он выглядит как основной вид деятельности, а клиентам при этом рассказывают про инвестиции, пассивный доход и успех в жизни, это наводит на очевидные выводы.

Суть предложения Гермеса такая: инвесторы открывают счет и перечисляют компании доллары или евро, а взамен получают пассивный доход. Минимальная сумма инвестиционного контракта 10 тысяч долларов или евро. При этом первый взнос может быть 1130 долларов или 1100 евро, а оставшуюся сумму можно довнести позже.

Чтобы открыть счет Виста, надо заполнить регистрационную форму на сайте Лайф-из-гуд. При регистрации сайт просит поставить галочку Я ознакомился и принимаю условия указанные в публичной оферте (пунктуация сохранена).

По ссылке открывается не оферта, а договор об оказании услуг. В договоре не указаны название и реквизиты компании, с которой заключается договор. Кроме того, речь в нем идет не об управлении активами, а только об образовательных и консультационных услугах об инвестиционных механизмах и способах управления капиталом. Это не похоже на обещанный пассивный доход от слова совсем. Таким образом, зазывалы в пирамиду пытаются уйти от ответственности.

Чтобы открыть счет и пользоваться им, придется заплатить различные комиссии. Все они прописаны в договоре:

Комиссия за открытие счета: 100 евро или 130 долларов.
Ажио, или входная комиссия: 7% от суммы лицевого счета. На сайте есть пример расчета: при вложении 100 000 $ ажио составит 7000 $.
Комиссия за управление счетом: 1% в год от размера счета, взимается каждый месяц по 1/12.
Комиссия с прибыли: 20% от ежемесячной прибыли, полученной от инвестиционных продуктов сторонних партнерских компаний или физических лиц, в результате рекомендаций и деятельности Исполнителя.
Итак, LIG состоит из двух основных компаний: Гермес, которая предлагает участникам инвестиционный доход (с идеей полученную прибыль направить на квартиру) и Бест-Вэй, являющаяся ЖНК. Что это такое?

Это Жилищный накопительный кооператив (общепринятое сокращение ЖНК) вид потребительского кооператива, сочетающий в себе качества финансового и жилищно-строительного кооператива. ЖНК работают в соответствии с 215-ФЗ О жилищных накопительных кооперативах. Целью деятельности жилищных накопительных кооперативов является удовлетворения потребностей членов кооператива в жилых помещениях путём объединения членами кооператива паевых взносов. Жилищный накопительный кооператив имеет право:

- привлекать и использовать денежные средства граждан на приобретение жилых помещений;

- вкладывать имеющиеся у него денежные средства в строительство жилых помещений (в том числе в многоквартирных домах), а также участвовать в строительстве жилых помещений в качестве застройщика или участника долевого строительства;

- приобретать жилые помещения;

- привлекать заёмные денежные средства, общая величина не должна превышать сорок процентов стоимости имущества кооператива.

Членами жилищного накопительного кооператива могут быть только граждане РФ. Жилищный накопительный кооператив создаётся по инициативе не менее чем пятидесяти человек и не более чем пяти тысяч человек. Контроль за деятельностью кооператива по привлечению и использованию денежных средств граждан на приобретение жилых помещений, а также за соблюдением кооперативом требований действующего законодательства Российской Федерации осуществляет Центральный банк Российской Федерации.

Уже отсюда понятно, что заявления заинтересованных лиц из структур LIG о том, что ЦБ не в праве вмешиваться в деятельность собственно LIG лишены оснований. Может и вмешался.

Если говорить о цифрах, то на 13 декабря 2021 года в LIG было свыше 19 000 пайщиков изо всех уголков РФ. LIG выкупил и передал в безвозмездное пользование пайщикам примерно 2 500 объектов недвижимости, из них по 247 пайщики полностью выплатили пай, оформив недвижимость в собственность. Интересная статистика - 19 000 вступили, заплатив членский взнос в 160 000 рублей, но лишь 8 часть из них накопила необходимые 35% для получения недвижимости при том, что фактически недвижимость их собственностью не является. Заявления о том, что получившие недвижимость прописаны в квартирах - это пережитки советского прошлого и, вероятно, сознательное введение остальных в заблуждение. В современной РФ не существует института прописки, есть регистрация, постоянная и временная. Есть найм жилья и есть собственность. Допускаю, что какая-то часть людей все еще проживает в государственных квартирах и не оформила их в собственность, но это - давно не норма, как это было в СССР (где собственность как раз была редким явлением).

По сути кооператив посредник между покупателем и продавцом жилья, а это увеличивает риски. Приходится полагаться на то, что кооператив соблюдает закон и что он не закроется до того, как вы оформите квартиру на себя.

Даже если все по закону, риск потерять деньги остается. Если кооператив по каким-то причинам перестанет работать, его собственность распродадут. Сначала он рассчитается с кредиторами и только затем вернет деньги пайщикам пропорционально их паевым взносам. Хватит ли у кооператива денег, чтобы вернуть все паевые взносы, неизвестно.

And that sight will become more common in the coming years, as the city’s police pursue an ambitious campaign to install thousands of cameras to elevate their surveillance capabilities.

Though it consistently ranks among the world’s safest big cities, police in the Asian financial hub say the new cameras are needed to fight crime and have raised the possibility of equipping them with powerful facial recognition and artificial intelligence tools.

That’s sparked alarm among some experts who see it as taking Hong Kong one step closer to the pervasive surveillance systems of mainland China, warning of the technology’s repressive potential.

Hong Kong police had previously set a target of installing 2,000 new surveillance cameras this year, and potentially more than that each subsequent year. The force plans to eventually introduce facial recognition to these cameras, security chief Chris Tang told local media in July adding that police could use AI in the future to track down suspects.
In a statement to CNN, the Hong Kong Police Force said it was studying how police in other countries use surveillance cameras, including how they use AI. But it’s not clear how many of the new cameras may have facial recognition capabilities, or whether there’s a timeline for when the tech will be introduced.

Tang and the Hong Kong police have repeatedly pointed to other jurisdictions, including Western democracies, that also make wide use of surveillance cameras for law enforcement. For instance, Singapore has 90,000 cameras and the United Kingdom has more than seven million, Tang told local newspaper Sing Tao Daily in June.

While some of those places, like the UK, have started using facial recognition cameras, experts say these early experiments have highlighted the need for careful regulation and privacy protections. Hong Kong police told CNN they would “comply with relevant laws” and follow strong internal guidelines but haven’t elaborated in depth on what that would look like.

Emmanuel Rondeau has photographed tigers across Asia for the past decade, from the remotest recesses of Siberia to the pristine valleys of Bhutan. But when he set out to photograph the tigers in the ancient rainforests of Malaysia, he had his doubts.

“We were really not sure that this was going to work,” says the French wildlife photographer. That’s because the country has just 150 tigers left, hidden across tens of thousands of square kilometers of dense rainforest.

“Tiger numbers in Malaysia have been going down, down, down, at an alarming rate,” says Rondeau. In the 1950s, Malaysia had around 3,000 tigers, but a combination of habitat loss, a decline in prey, and poaching decimated the population. By 2010, there were just 500 left, according to WWF, and the number has continued to fall.

The Malayan tiger is a subspecies native to Peninsular Malaysia, and it’s the smallest of the tiger subspecies in Southeast Asia.

“We are in this moment where, if things suddenly go bad, in five years the Malayan tiger could be a figure of the past, and it goes into the history books,” Rondeau adds.

Determined not to let that happen, Rondeau joined forces with WWF-Malaysia last year to profile the elusive big cat and put a face to the nation’s conservation work.

It took 12 weeks of preparations, eight cameras, 300 pounds of equipment, five months of patient photography and countless miles trekked through the 117,500-hectare Royal Belum State Park… but finally, in November, Rondeau got the shot that he hopes can inspire the next generation of conservationists.

Beutel, a computer engineer specializing in mountain monitoring, had just witnessed a glacier collapse. On May 28, an avalanche of millions of tons of ice and rock barreled down the slope, burying Blatten, a centuries-old village nestled in the valley below.

Local authorities had already evacuated the village after parts of the mountain had crumbled onto the glacier; a 64-year old man believed to have stayed remains missing.

But no one expected an event of this magnitude.

Successive rock avalanches onto the glacier increased the pressure on the ice, causing it to melt faster and the glacier to accelerate, eventually destabilizing it and pushing it from its bed. The collapse was sudden, violent and catastrophic. “This one just left no moment to catch a breath,” Beutel said.
The underlying causes will take time to unravel. A collapse of this magnitude would have been set in motion by geological factors going back decades at least, said Matthias Huss, a glaciologist at the Swiss university ETH Zurich.

But it’s “likely climate change is involved,” he said, as warming temperatures melt the ice that holds mountains together. It’s a problem affecting mountains across the planet.

People have long been fascinated with mountains for their dramatic beauty. Some make their homes beneath them around 1 billion live in mountain communities others are drawn by adventure, the challenge of conquering peaks.

These majestic landscapes have always been dangerous, but as the world warms, they are becoming much more unpredictable and much deadlier.

“We do not fully understand the hazard at the moment, nor how the dangers are changing with climate change,” said David Petley, an Earth scientist at the University of Hull in England.

There is increasing concern about the future of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation known as the AMOC a system of currents that works like a giant conveyor belt, pulling warm water from the Southern Hemisphere and tropics to the Northern Hemisphere, where it cools, sinks and flows back south.

Multiple studies suggest the AMOC is weakening with some projecting it could even collapse this century as global warming disrupts the balance of heat and salinity that keeps it moving. This would usher in huge global weather and climate shifts including plunging temperatures in Europe, which relies on the AMOC for its mild climate.

What’s less clear, however, is how these impacts will unfold in a world heated up by humans burning fossil fuels.

“What if the AMOC collapses and we have climate change? Does the cooling win or does the warming win?” asked Rene van Westen, a marine and atmospheric researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and co-author of the paper published Wednesday in the Geophysical Research Letters journal.

This new study is the first to use a modern, complex climate model to answer the question, he told CNN.
The researchers looked at a scenario where the AMOC weakens by 80% and the Earth is around 2 degrees Celsius warmer than the period before humans began burning large amounts of fossil fuels. The planet is currently at 1.2 degrees of warming.

They focused on what would happen as the climate stabilized post-collapse, multiple decades into the future.

Even in this hotter world, they found “substantial cooling” over Europe with sharp drops in average winter temperatures and more intense cold extremes a very different picture than the United States, where the study found temperatures would continue to increase even with an AMOC collapse.

Sea ice would spread southward as far as Scandinavia, parts of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the research found. This would have a huge impact on cold extremes as the white surface of the ice reflects the sun’s energy back into space, amplifying cooling.

As the leaves rustle atop the hills in Nantou, Taiwan’s largest tea-producing area, the farm suddenly comes alive, millions of tiny green bugs hopping into the air.

While many farmers might frown at the sight of these pests munching on their crops, Lee Ming-cheng, a third-generation tea farmer and maker, can’t hide the broad smile on his sun-kissed face.

This “green insect fog,” as locals call it, is a sign they’ll have a good harvest of Gui Fei Oolong (also known as Honey Flavor Dong Ding Oolong or Concubine Oolong), a special tea that’s prized for offering a hint of honey flavor.

And it’s these endemic insects, called Jacobiasca formosana, or tea jassids, that are to thank for it.

When the jassids feed, the leaves go into defensive mode and produce a sweetened hormone that tastes and smells like honey, creating one of the world’s most intriguing teas: mixiang cha, or honey-fragrance tea.

The bug-bitten leaves are oxidized and roasted to create a variety of beverages. There’s mixiang black tea (made with fully oxidized leaves) and oolong teas like Oriental Beauty (partially oxidized and not roasted) and the previously mentioned Concubine Tea (partially oxidized and roasted), to name a few.

Unlike Taiwan’s ubiquitous bubble tea, mixiang tea is still highly limited and largely off-the-radar. But what was once a hidden gem among serious tea lovers is now starting to gain international attention.

To recreate a scenario that may have produced Earth’s first organic molecules, researchers built upon experiments from 1953 when American chemists Stanley Miller and Harold Urey concocted a gas mixture mimicking the atmosphere of ancient Earth. Miller and Urey combined ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), hydrogen (H2) and water, enclosed their “atmosphere” inside a glass sphere and jolted it with electricity, producing simple amino acids containing carbon and nitrogen. The Miller-Urey experiment, as it is now known, supported the scientific theory of abiogenesis: that life could emerge from nonliving molecules.
For the new study, scientists revisited the 1953 experiments but directed their attention toward electrical activity on a smaller scale, said senior study author Dr. Richard Zare, the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Natural Science and professor of chemistry at Stanford University in California. Zare and his colleagues looked at electricity exchange between charged water droplets measuring between 1 micron and 20 microns in diameter. (The width of a human hair is 100 microns.)

“The big droplets are positively charged. The little droplets are negatively charged,” Zare told CNN. “When droplets that have opposite charges are close together, electrons can jump from the negatively charged droplet to the positively charged droplet.”
The researchers mixed ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen in a glass bulb, then sprayed the gases with water mist, using a high-speed camera to capture faint flashes of microlightning in the vapor. When they examined the bulb’s contents, they found organic molecules with carbon-nitrogen bonds. These included the amino acid glycine and uracil, a nucleotide base in RNA.

“We discovered no new chemistry; we have actually reproduced all the chemistry that Miller and Urey did in 1953,” Zare said. Nor did the team discover new physics, he added the experiments were based on known principles of electrostatics.

“What we have done, for the first time, is we have seen that little droplets, when they’re formed from water, actually emit light and get this spark,” Zare said. “That’s new. And that spark causes all types of chemical transformations.”

Some seismologists thought their instruments were broken when they started picking up vibrations through the ground back in September, said Stephen Hicks, a study co-author and a seismologist at University College London.

The highlight was being allowed into a space crammed full with shelves and vitrines holding all sorts of eclectic artifacts from swords to coins with the odd car and carriage standing in the grounds.

It wasn’t necessarily the kind of museum you’d find elsewhere in the world, but it was definitely a sight that needed seeing.

Today, it has grown and now claims to be one of the world’s largest private museums. It holds over 30,000 items, including a fleet of traditional dhow sailboats, and countless carpets. There’s also an entire house that once stood in Damascus, Syria.

There are archaeological finds dating to the Jurassic age, ancient copies of the Quran, a section that details the importance of pearling within Qatar’s history, and jewelry dating to the 17th century.

There are also items from 2022’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar including replica trophies, balls used in the games, entry passes, football jerseys and even shelves full of slightly creepy dolls and children’s plush animals.

Some of the more disturbing exhibits include various items of Third Reich paraphernalia in the wartime room, and, strangely enough, several showcases of birds’ legs with marking rings on them. Basically, whatever you can think of, you have a very good chance of finding it here.

Rumor even has it that behind a locked door is a room filled with the late Princess Diana’s dresses and other memorabilia, accessible only to a select few visitors. Another door hides a room, no longer open to the public, filled with collectibles of the late Saddam Hussein.

The two friends had each bought a train ticket known as the Interrail or Eurail pass, allowing young travelers a period of unlimited rail travel around Europe.

“I’m Swedish, I was working at Swedish Radio at the time, and had saved up money for going on my Interrail,” says Nina. “I wanted to see all of Europe.”

Traveling by train from Budapest to Athens was set to take about four days, weaving south through eastern Europe. In Belgrade which was then part of the former Yugoslavia, but is now the capital of Serbia the passengers had to switch trains.

And that’s when Nina and Loa grabbed the empty compartment for themselves and settled in, ready to enjoy the extra space. Then, the knocking at the door.

The two friends met each other’s eyes. They both knew, in that moment, that their solitude was to be short-lived.

“And then behind the door we see three heads poking in,” recalls Nina. “It was a Scotsman, an Englishman and an Irishman. It was like the start of a joke. And I thought, ‘What is this?’”

The three men were friendly, apologetic, slightly out of breath. They explained they’d fallen asleep on their last train, and almost missed this one in fact, this train had started rolling out of the station but suddenly slowed down. The three stragglers had managed to hop on as the train ground to a halt.

The precise details of the “victory plan” Zelensky plans to present in separate meetings to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are unknown, having been closely held until they are presented to the American leaders.

But according to people briefed on its broad contours, the plan reflects the Ukrainian leader’s urgent appeals for more immediate help countering Russia’s invasion. Zelensky is also poised to push for long-term security guarantees that could withstand changes in American leadership ahead of what is widely expected to be a close presidential election between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The plan, people familiar with it said, acts as Zelensky’s response to growing war weariness even among his staunchest of western allies. It will make the case that Ukraine can still win and does not need to cede Russian-seized territory for the fighting to end if enough assistance is rushed in.

That includes again asking permission to fire Western provided long-range weapons deeper into Russian territory, a line Biden once was loathe to cross but which he’s recently appeared more open to as he has come under growing pressure to relent.

What would be the ultimate solution to the energy problems of an advanced civilization? Renowned British American physicist Freeman Dyson theorized it would be a shell made up of mirrors or solar panels that completely surrounds a star harnessing all the energy it produces.

If it sounds like science fiction, that’s because it is: Dyson took the idea from Olaf Stapledon’s 1937 novel “Star Maker,” and he was always open about that. The late scientist was a professor emeritus at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
Still, coming from a thinker who some in the scientific community say might have been worthy of a Nobel Prize early in his career, the concept took hold and the hypothetical megastructures became known as Dyson spheres, even though the physicist later clarified that they would actually consist of “a loose collection or swarm of objects traveling on independent orbits around the star.”

In his paper, Dyson also noted that Dyson spheres would give off waste heat detectable as infrared radiation, and suggested that looking for that byproduct would be a viable method for searching for extraterrestrial life. However, he added that infrared radiation by itself would not necessarily mean extraterrestrial intelligence, and that one of the strongest reasons for searching for such sources was that new types of natural astronomical objects might be discovered.

“Scientists (at the time) were largely receptive, not to the likelihood that alien civilisations would be found to exist, but that a search for waste heat would be a good place to look,” said George Dyson, a technology writer and author and the second of Dyson’s six children, via email. “Science fiction, from ‘Footfall’ to ‘Star Trek,’ took the idea and ran with it, while social critics adopted the Dyson sphere as a vehicle for questioning the wisdom of unlimited technological growth.”

‘You get one split second’: The story behind a viral bird photo

By his own admission, James Crombie knew “very, very little” about starlings before Covid-19 struck. An award-winning sports photographer by trade, his only previous encounter with the short-tailed birds occurred when one fell into his fireplace after attempting to nest in the chimney of his home in the Irish Midlands.

“I always had too much going on with sport to think about wildlife,” said Crombie, who has covered three Olympic Games and usually shoots rugby and the Irish game of hurling, in a Zoom interview.

With the pandemic bringing major events to a halt, however, the photographer found himself at a loose end. So, when a recently bereaved friend proposed visiting a nearby lake to see flocks of starlings in flight (known as murmurations), Crombie brought along his camera one that was conveniently well-suited to the job.

“You get one split second,” he said of the similarities between sport and nature photography. “They’re both shot at relatively high speeds and they’re both shot with equipment that can handle that.”

On that first evening, in late 2020, they saw around 100 starlings take to the sky before roosting at dusk. The pair returned to the lake Lough Ennell in Ireland’s County Westmeath over successive nights, choosing different vantage points from which to view the birds. The routine became a form of therapy for his grieving friend and a source of fascination for Crombie.

“It started to become a bit of an obsession,” recalled the photographer, who recently published a book of his starling images. “And every night that we went down, we learned a little bit more. We realized where we had to be and where (the starlings) were going to be. It just started to snowball from there.”
‘I’ve got something special here’
Scientists do not know exactly why starlings form murmurations, though they are thought to offer collective protection against predators, such as falcons. The phenomenon can last from just a few seconds to 45 minutes, sometimes involving tens of thousands of individual birds. In Ireland, starlings’ numbers are boosted during winter, as migrating flocks arrive from breeding grounds around Western Europe and Scandinavia.

Crombie often saw the birds form patterns and abstract shapes, their varying densities appearing like the subtle gradations of paint strokes. The photographer became convinced that, with enough patience, he could capture a recognizable shape.

The researchers involved in describing the new species chose nkosi as its name. A reference to the local Zulu word for “chief,” the name reflects the species’ crown-like head shape and acknowledges South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province where it was found.
